Any person that may be involved in a caring situation could benefit from reading books regarding aging. The 36 Hour Day is a book in the senior industry that is required reading. I believe that when we are educated on any situation that we are dealing with it reduces fear and anxiety. We should thank God for authors that are willing to share their own personal and professional experiences to help us. Written by Geriatric Nurse Specialist Gayle Horton
The Color of Water is a powerful book on several levels. The story of faith is the prevailing theme, with the message of love and acceptance right underneath it, interwoven with the story of race relationships. Author James McBride writes an autobiographical story of his mother, himself, his 11 siblings, father and extended family. His style is very appealing: chapters alternate between he and his mother; one is written in italics the other is plain text. While the main themes were intriguing and inspiring to me, what struck me the most is that James McBride and I are exaclty the same age. I kept comparing my growing up experiences with his and I kept wondering how I missed such race issues his family dealt with in my own life. I grew up in Atlanta and never felt I lived in a prejudiced environment but while reading this book, over and over again I kept wondering was I really that naive? Did life really exist like that?
I highly recommend The Color of Water by James McBride for those who enjoy personal stories and stories that prickle our thoughts.
